Choosing Kitchen Cabinets
If you’re redoing your kitchen, or even trying to do a modest makeover, you’ll quickly discover there are very many decisions that need to be made. In this series, we’re guiding you through some of the options and decisions you’ll need to make with brief explanations to help you discern what works best for your vision and your lifestyle. In this blog post, we’re covering some of the most popular styles of kitchen cabinets.
Flat Panel
Flat/slab style kitchen cabinets can (but don’t always) offer a more modern look. They can be installed insetl so the edge of the cabinet door is flush with the cabinet edge, partial overlay; so the cabinet door sits on top of the cabinet structure leaving some of it exposed, or full overlay; so tht the cabinet doors fully cover the cabinet structure and none of it is on display.
Shaker Style
This is probably the most common kitchen cabinet style, and comes in a few different variations. Some brands, like Semihandmade, offer thinner, more modern looking shaker style cabinet fronts, bbut like the slab/flat style, this option can also be installed full overlay, partial overlay, or inset, with the full overlay being the most popular now (as seen in image #4, shaker panel, full overlay).
Other Styles
Plywood and stainless steel kitchens are a much more contemporary modern approach to kitchen cabinetry. These types of cabinets are typically made bespoke, as they are not available at most big-box stores.
Interestingly, Ikea and Plykea Kitchens have made cabinet fronts so you can get stainless steel and plywood look for a fraction of the price of a bespoke kitchen.
There are a lot of options available when it comes to kitchen cabinet choice and design. Explore the options that exist beyond your local showroom; visit the library, flip through magazines, scroll through Pinterest…there are more options than you could ever dream that there are.
